چکیده

We investigate a short-term memory formation mechanism in a nonlinear dynamical system with many degrees of freedom. The duration of these memories increases as the number of degrees of freedom in the system is increased, and some properties of the memory evolution display scaling behavior. Previously observed self-organization in the long time behavior of this model is shown to be a remnant of this transient process. We present experiments on charge-density waves which we interpret in terms of this transient selforganization mechanism. We report short-term memory formation in a nonlinear dynamical system with many degrees of freedom. The system “remembers” a sequence of impulses for a transient period, but it coarsens and eventually “forgets” nearly all of them. The memory duration increases as the number of degrees of freedom in the system increases. We demonstrate the existence of these transient memories in a laboratory ex...

Short-Term Memory Through Persistent Activity: Evolution of Self-Stopping and Self-Sustaining Activity in Spiking Neural Networks

Memories in the brain are separated in two categories: short-term and longterm memories. Long-term memories remain for a lifetime, while short-term ones exist from a few milliseconds to a few minutes. Within short-term memory studies, there is debate about what neural structure could implement it. Indeed, mechanisms responsible for long-term memories appear inadequate for the task. Instead, it ...

A New Hypothesis for Sleep: Tuning for Criticality

We propose that the critical function of sleep is to prevent uncontrolled neuronal feedback while allowing rapid responses and prolonged retention of short-term memories. Through learning, the brain is tuned to react optimally to environmental challenges. Optimal behavior often requires rapid responses and the prolonged retention of short-term memories. At a neuronal level, these correspond to ...
